Why Give?

Wonderfully, God has commissioned us to be his agents in the world and this role includes supporting our parish church and the wider Christian community financially.

Our giving pays for the people and resources needed to fulfil our mission of proclaiming the Gospel and helping our members grow in love for God and each other.   The costs include financial support of our vicar; employment of our administrators; contributing to clergy training; maintaining our buildings; hire of the school; purchase of equipment, books and refreshments as well as paying for various services including copyright, insurance, audit, software, gas, electricity, water, telephone, and broadband.  We should also give to support those proclaiming the Gospel beyond our parish and help those in need, especially our brothers and sisters in Christ.

What are the Current Needs?

We give thanks to God for generous one-off gifts which have enabled us to pay for all our regular bills, renew our church heating system, and contribute our full Parish Share to the Diocese of London Common Fund in 2023.  The Parish Share is the annual amount of money requested by the diocese to sustain the parish over the long term and therefore something we aspire to pay in full.

We pray that God will enable us to meet our needs in 2024 as he did in 2023, and that our regular costs would be met by regular giving.  This is an audacious prayer because in recent years inflation has increased our costs while our regular giving has declined.  The income shortfall is expected to be £30,000 in 2024, which represents 15% of total regular expenditure.  Nevertheless, if we depend upon God and ask him, with listening hearts, to guide us we can have confidence that He will meet our needs.  This prayer is commended to individual members and the Parochial Church Council (PCC).

We pray that God would lead Johnny and Hannah to their next assignment by a clear path.  Johnny’s curacy comes to an end in July 2024, and we would like to be able to offer him a two‑year post at All Saints’ Laleham as Assistant Minister.  The PCC seeks pledges of giving from church members to help decide whether an offer can be made.  The total annual cost of employing an assistant minister is estimated to be £73,410 broken down as follows:

·         Stipend, National Insurance and Pension: £43,260

·         House rent: £25,200

·         Council Tax: £3,500

·         Water Bill: £450

·         Working expenses: £1000.

Please pray about these needs and discuss them with the Vicar, Churchwarden, Treasurer, and other PCC members.  You may also find the general advice about How Much To Give helpful.  When you have come to a decision then please complete the form Response to ASL 2024 Appeal and send it to the Treasurer.  Please respond by 18/02/2024.

How Much to Give?

All that we have comes from God and all that we have is His.  He is generous and good, He pours Himself out in love, and He calls us to follow His example in His power.  Giving generously to support Christian ministry is a natural response to God’s overflowing gifts to us.  Understanding that we might need reassurance to give sacrificially, God promises that all our needs will be met if we give generously.  Andy Saville, our vicar, showed us many examples in the Bible of God meeting the needs of those who gave generously.  You may wish to remind yourself by listening to his sermon on the topic.

The Church of England has provided the following guidance which helpfully gives an initial target for the percentage of income to give:

(a) encourage church members (including children and young people) to live generously as disciples of Jesus Christ, joyfully giving time, skills, money and other resources to God’s mission in the world, in times of economic stringency as well as of plenty, in response to the lavish generosity of God to us in Christ who made Himself poor that we might become rich;

(b) reconfirm its challenge to church members to assess annually their financial giving as a proportion of income and to adopt as an initial target:

•      the giving of 5% of their after tax income to and through the church,

•      and a similar amount to other work that helps to build God’s kingdom.

So, an initial target of 10% split equally between the local church and wider ministry!  For some affording the target may seem a long way off.  For others the target may have been exceeded as they have responded to years of gracious blessing by God.  Whatever your situation, prayerfully consider the priorities for your income and decide upon a regular sum that you will give to the church and others.  If you are not sure who should receive your gift to others, then you could consider the organisations that send representatives from time to time, and are included in our church prayer pointers:

·         Barnabas Aid

·         Bible Society

·         Compassion UK

·         London City Mission

·         Prison Fellowship

·         Tearfund

How to Add Gift Aid?

Give Aid increases the value of your gift to the church by 25% at no cost to you.  You just need to be sure that you will pay income tax or capital gains tax amounting to 25% of your gift.  For example, if you plan to give £100 in a tax year, then you can add Gift Aid if you expect to pay income tax or capital gains tax amounting to at least £25 in the same tax year.

The Treasurer will only be able to claim Gift Aid on donations that are traceable to you.  In practice that means the donation must be by bank transfer, cheque, or card.

If your gift is eligible and you are giving by bank transfer or cheque, then please complete a Gift Aid Declaration Form and give it to the Treasurer.  If your gift is eligible and you are giving by card then please give Online or via QR Code and complete the Gift Aid Declaration offered to you by Give A Little.  Give A Little stores the association of your card number and your Gift Aid Declaration so that you only need to complete the form when you first donate using the card.

If you give £30 or less anonymously by cash or contactless card, then the government will add 25% under the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS).  You do not need to be a taxpayer or fill in any forms.  The Treasurer will automatically make a GASDS claim for every eligible donation.

How to Give by Bank Transfer?

You can make a one-off donation or set up a regular donation (standing order) using your bank’s app or online banking website.   If you prefer instead to send a written instruction to your bank, then you should fill in the Standing Order Form and give it to the Treasurer.  If you are using your bank’s app or website to set-up the transfer yourself then you will need the church’s bank account details, which are as follows:

Account Name: All Saints’ Laleham PCC

Sort Code: 405240

Account Number: 00024933

Bank transfers allow a reference to be communicated.  The reference is used by the Treasurer to direct the money to the fund financing the purpose for which was given.  Donations to the General fund allow the Parochial Church Council (PCC) to direct the spending to meet the aims of ministry at All Saints’ Laleham.  Enter ‘General’ as the reference to delegate the spending decision to the PCC.  If you are responding to a special appeal, then enter the name of the appeal as the reference.  If you are still not sure, then ask the Treasurer.

If your gift is eligible for Gift Aid, then please make sure that the Treasurer has a Gift Aid Declaration from you.

Banks do not normally charge any fee for processing bank transfers using Faster Payments or BACS.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Give Cash?

You can donate cash at our services in the church or school.  In the church simply put your cash donation in the offertory box near the main entrance.  In the school put your cash donation in the wooden box marked ‘Giving’ on one of the tables at the rear of the hall.

The Government allows the church to claim Gift Aid on cash donations up to £30.  So, a donation of £30 will be worth £37.50 to the church even if you are not a taxpayer.

The bank does not charge the church for depositing cash but the finance team must count it and take it to the bank.  Two independent people count and record cash donations to minimise the risk of theft.

How to Give by Cheque?

Please make your cheque payable to “All Saints’ Laleham PCC” and either put it in the offertory box / giving box at a service or post it to: All Saints’ Laleham Parish Office, The Broadway, Laleham, Staines‑upon‑Thames, Surrey, TW18 1RZ.

Please write your name and address on the back of the cheque if you would like a receipt.

If your donation is for a specific purpose, then please write the purpose on the back of the cheque.

If your gift is eligible for Gift Aid, then please make sure that the Treasurer has a Gift Aid Declaration from you.

Our bank charges the church 60 pence for paying in a cheque but waives the fee providing we do not pay in more than 20 cheques per month.  Normally we receive many fewer cheques in a month.
