New! 3rd April – A message from Rev Andy Saville

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5.6-7

How are you coping with the crisis? I’m finding that our experiences vary hugely. For many this is a tremendously challenging time. For others a period of relative calm. For most of us life has changed in ways we could have barely imagined, and the immediate future remains very uncertain. The next couple of weeks seem likely to bring a peak in the number of deaths in our country, and the virus continues to spread around the world.

How reassuring to know that God is unchanging, and we can take all our anxieties, in the present and for the future, to him in prayer. And where we struggle to pray, we have the promise of Romans 8.26:

the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
We do not know what we ought to pray for,
but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Many of us also have the encouragement of praying with several hundred of our church family in our services each Sunday on the ‘All Saints’ Laleham’ YouTube channel at 10am. Do join us if you are able.

Palm Sunday

This Sunday is ‘Palm Sunday’, when we remember that Jesus was welcomed as king, riding on a donkey. However, he also entered Jerusalem knowing he had come to die. He is the mighty king, but also the suffering king. And this is reflected in this palm cross: the crowds waved palm branches to acknowledge his majesty, but it has been shaped into a cross to remind us of his meekness. You might like to keep a palm cross somewhere you will see it regularly through the year as a reminder of Jesus’ greatness and goodness, and that he calls us to take up our cross daily as we walk with him.

O what a mystery, meekness and majesty,
Bow down and worship for this is your God

Holy Week Services

In the week running up to Easter there will be two extra services on our YouTube channel:

  • 9th April Maundy Thursday 7pm Holy Communion
  • 10th April Good Friday 2pm An Hour at the Cross

Morning Prayer

This week I trialled weekday morning services on YouTube and Zoom. I’m going to continue on Zoom at 8am each weekday. I think Zoom gives a greater sense of worshipping together. I’ll be using ‘Prayer During the Day’ which lasts just 10 minutes. The text will be on the screen, or you can access it on the Church of England Daily Prayer app or website. I have found Zoom very easy to access, taking less than a minute, and the link is on the church website or email the Office. It would be lovely if you could join me.
